April Outdoor Web Site of the Month

I’m going European in this month’s outdoor web sites of the month. I found a nice looking Celtic Football League site from Germany and FIFA’s World Cup Site.

Celtic Site

This site is very similar to the Madison Trout Unlimited site we showcased last month. The use of textures and grunge styling is top notch stuff. The site feels like you are looking at a player dossier. I especially enjoy the combination of the hand written fonts and the sketchy icons used throughout the site. Amazingly this site does not use flash. The whole site is built using html, css and java. My only critique is the lack of any real content on the homepage. But overall this is a very high quality site and a unique use of java, css and html.

FIFA World cup coverage

I like giving you two sites that feel very different. The FIFA site is clean almost business like in styling. The homepage is packed with information but it doesn’t overwhelm you when you first load the page. The countdown across the top is a nice touch and helps to build excitement over the tournament. The ads are small and unobtrusive.

One issue that I see, is the call to action buttons for ordering tickets get lost in all the orange. Instead of orange a nice blue might help make the button stick out more. “Calls to Action” need to separate themselves from site content or they seldom get clicked.

FIFA team pages

Another nice touch are the team pages. You will be amazed at how much information is contained in this site. The site is filled with jquery enhancements that help deliver all this content in such a way that you don’t feel lost or buried with a mountain of stuff.
